Spend 4 Days in Cartagena, Colombia – The Perfect Itinerary
Colombia is a must-visit destination in South America, with stunning Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, rich history, and a vibrant culture. This country was a bucket-list destination for me, not only for its colonial charm and breathtaking landscapes but also for its welcoming people and incredible food scene. From the colorful streets of Cartagena to the turquoise waters of the Rosario Islands, Colombia offers an unforgettable travel experience. If you’re planning a quick getaway, here’s how to spend 4 days in Cartagena, and make the most of your trip, balancing exploration, relaxation, and delicious food.

Day 1: Arrive & Explore the Best of Cartagena’s Historic Center
Your adventure in Cartagena starts now! After landing at Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG), take a short 15-20 minute drive to your hotel, check in, freshen up, and get ready to explore.
Cartagena is an extremely walkable city with a rich colonial past. You can either explore on your own or book a free walking tour via GuruWalk, where a local guide will take you through the historic Walled City and the colorful streets of Getsemaní, sharing fascinating information, stories and history of Colombia.
P.S: While the walking tour is free, the guides work for tips and so it’s recommended to give them a decent tip for all their hard work and time.
As you walk through the Walled City, you’ll spot the famous Palenqueras: Afro-Colombian women dressed in bright traditional outfits, selling fruit or posing for photos. Take an opportunity to dance with the Palenqueras and capture all the moments. While this isn’t technically free, tipping them at least 10,000 COP (~$2 USD) per lady is a good place to start.
As soon as dusk hits, Getsemaní comes to life with street performers, lively music, and lots of happy people. Take advantage of the dinner scene & nightlife in Getsemaní, exploring these options:
- Grab some street food for a quick and tasty local bite.
- Pick a cozy local eatery for an authentic experience.
- Dine at Restaurant Cande, known for its elegant take on Cartagena’s traditional flavors.
Day 2: Brunch, Street Art, & Food Tasting Tour - A Food Lover’s Guide to Cartagena
Start your day with a delicious brunch at Ely Café or La Brioche for a coffee and some delicious pastries or a more filling breakfast with fresh juices.
Day 3: Day Trip to Explore the Stunning Rosario Islands
No trip to Cartagena is complete without experiencing the Rosario Islands, a stunning Caribbean paradise with the most beautiful blue waters just off the coast.
Book a Catamaran Island Tour (like this one), which includes:
- A morning snack and welcome drink.
- A delicious lunch with fresh fruits.
- Time to swim and snorkel in the Caribbean Sea.
- A laid-back vibe with music (and honestly, a mini party).
After a long, sun-soaked day at sea, you can explore a local restaurant for dinner or simply order room service to relax.
Day 4: Relaxation & A Hands-On Cooking Class
Take the morning to relax by your hotel’s pool or enjoy any of its other amenities. After all, you paid to stay there, so why not take advantage of it? While at it, you can also spend the time catching up on work or with friends and family back home.
Then, set out for a Rooftop Cooking Class in Getsemaní. One of the best experiences in Cartagena is taking Cooking as a Colombian class, held on a rooftop in the heart of Getsemaní. You’ll get to choose from a selection of traditional Colombian dishes (dietary options available) and have a skilled chef tell you about the history of the meal and guide you through the process of actually making it from scratch. Once you’re done, you get to enjoy your homemade meal with a drink, water, and dessert included.
This was my absolute favorite experience in Cartagena, and I highly recommend it!
Day 5: Head Home
It’s time to say goodbye to Cartagena! Depending on your flight time, you can squeeze in some last-minute sightseeing or shopping before heading to the airport.

There are plenty of accommodation options, but I personally recommend Getsemaní or Manga for easy access to everything. Depending on how long you’re there for, consider splitting your stay between a hotel and an Airbnb for variety.

The official currency is the Colombian Peso (COP). You can exchange money or withdraw cash easily in the Walled City. USD and credit cards are widely accepted but keep loose cash for street vendors and emergencies.

Cartagena is extremely walkable. While Uber is available and affordable, it can sometimes take longer than just walking. I’d say a mix of walking and short Uber rides is the best way to get around.
